If You Are a Victim...
All the protection tips and anti-theft devices cannot guarantee that your vehicle will not be stolen. If you do become a victim, please follow these guidelines.
- If you see someone tampering with your vehicle, call 911 as quickly as possible. Don't begin a fight with anyone.
- If you discover that your vehicle has been stolen, call the police immediately!
- Speed is essential in the recovery of stolen vehicles. Many times the report can be taken over the telephone. Quick notification to law enforcement agencies enables them to find your vehicle before it is stripped.
- There are some things you can do to assist law enforcement agencies recover your vehicle in the event it is stolen:
To “Mark” your vehicle:
- Drop your business card in the window slot.
- Carefully engrave your initials inside the trunk, the hood or the dashboard near the VIN number.
- Carry a photocopy of your vehicle’s current registration and insurance card. If you have to go to your home or office to get this information, valuable time will be wasted.
- If arrests are made, help the police prosecute.
Over 50 percent of the cases never get past the pre-filing conferences because victims or witnesses do not show up to review the case with prosecutors. Be prepared to follow up with your case even after restitution has been made by your insurance company.
